I compliment NIC in having undertaken an exercise for creation of innovation agenda though the workshop held yesterday. I have made the following suggestions:-
1. We need to define the criteria to judge “what is innovation”, in the context of NIC.
2. We need to distinguish between an application, product and innovation.
3. NIC should come up with individual policies on innovation and product development.
4. Collaborative development of innovative applications of technology should be encouraged.
5. “Innovation Exchange” should be launched as a platform not only to show case innovations, but also for exchange of ideas and for networking of the innovators.
I request you to take necessary action on the above lines and present the same at the next Innovation Workshop planned for September, 2013.

Preliminary Meeting to initiate the formation of Ramganga Mitra in Moradabad

Citizens from various walks of life expected to come together to volunteer to become Ramganga Mitra (Friends of the Ramganga)

Ramganga river in Moradabad will soon have its own brigade of ‘mitras’ or friends to work towards its restoration and conservation as the District Administration of Moradabad in partnership with the World Wide Fund for Nature-India (WWF-India) organizes a meeting on ‘Ramganga Mitra’, on October 8..

The Ramganga Mitras (friends of the Ramganga) will be a group of citizens from Moradabad with representation and participation from diverse stakeholder groups such as People’s representatives, Corporators, Civil Society Organisations, NGOs, Community Based Organisations, Businesses, Educational Institutions, Researchers, Journalists, Individuals, Government bodies, students and others.

Ramganga Mitra is envisaged to be the agents of change who would be engaged on several key activities like monitoring of the river, nalah, groundwater and ponds in the city from time to time, clean up initiatives, campaign and outreach activities to sensitise the citizens of Moradabad on river conservation. They will also be actively engaged in planning and implementation of water and river conservation activities. Ramganga Mitra will also bring key issues concerning the state of water and river to the notice of the District Administration and the Nagar Nigam, leading to improved health of the Ramganga. The idea behind this initiative is also to bring together diverse stakeholders to work towards the common agenda of conserving water and river leading to significant health benefits to communities.

Shri Sanjay Kumar (IAS), District Magistrate will chair the meeting. Smt Veena Agarwal, Hon’ble Mayor is expected to be the Chief Guest.

Objectives of the meeting:

·         To discuss the concept of Ramganga  Mitra

·         To discuss the membership, roles and responsibilities

·         To identify potential areas of engagement towards Ramganga conservation

This meeting is held under the auspices of ‘Ramganga ke liye jeevan, Jeevan ke liye Ramganga’ campaign initiated by District Administration and WWF-India with the aim of restoring the ecological health of the Ramganga river.

Volunteering for a noble cause, Ramganga Mitras will be honoured and recognized by the District Administration in the long run for their commitment to the aim of restoring the river Ramganga.

Wildlife Week Celebrations in Moradabad conclude on an assured bright future for Ramganga

Winning students of the Wildlife Week Competitions received prizes by the District Magistrate

October 7, 2013, Moradabad: The finale of the Wildlife Week saw cheering faces of the students of Moradabad, as the prize distribution ceremony spearheaded by the District Magistrate of Moradabad, Shri Sanjay Kumar (IAS) along with senior Forest Department officials shared token of appreciation with the students for their active participation. The week long activities which included, poster, poetry, slogan writing and elocution competitions along with a quiz on Gangetic Dolphins started from October 1 till October 7, to commemorate the Wildlife Week in the city of Moradabad. These fun filled activities were organized to accelerate the awareness on the conservation of Ramganga river and wildlife conservation in the city, under WWF-India’s ‘Ramganga for Life, Life for Ramganga’ campaign.

Kumar Shaurya Rastogi of Chitragupt Inter College bagged the first prize for the elocution competition. Poster competition saw Kumari Shaili Singh of Boni Public School receiving the first prize and Kumari. Monica of Kasturba Gandhi won the first prize in the poetry competition. The girls’ team from the Kasturba Gandhi schools won the first prize in the quiz on Gangetic Dolphin. During the seven day long celebrations, the students also pledged to become ‘friends of the river’ or Ramganga Mitra and work towards its ecological wellbeing.

WWf-India’s Rivers for Life programme initiated Ramganga’s revival strategy in the city of Moradabad, in partnership with its District Administration. The revival strategy for the river envisions for communities, industries and Government to work together to bring the river back to life (improved ecological health). As part of the restoration plan, a mass awareness communication campaign has been devised with the focus on engaging diverse stakeholders to aspire for taking complete ownership, thereby becoming Ramganga Mitr.

“As we all know that today is the last day of the week long celebrations of the Wildlife Week. However, I would like to add that lets mark today as the beginning of a series of conservation activities which would involve young adults and students for Ramganga’s revival and to make our very own Eco Park (Deer Park) even more useful. If all of you would like to see Dolphins, Ghariyals, Mahaseer in our very own Ramganga river then, all of us need to work together with District Administration & WWF-India to achieve a shared vision for Ramganga. Again I would request you all to pledge today that we would reduce our consumption of polythene, would plant one sapling each year and ensure the conservation of water at our respective households!” said Shri Sanjay Kumar, IAS, District Magistrate.

Schools students witnessed WWF-India’s wildlife movies screenings, including a documentary film on Ramganga, painting competition, poster making, and elocution competition  on the theme of Aquatic Wildlife Conservation in Ramganga during the week long celebrations. “Awareness generated through these fun filled activities have been hugely successful in creating interest on aquatic wildlife existing in Ramganga and to unite to work towards its conservation & revival”, added Mr. Munne Ali, Basic Shiksha Adhikari, Moradabad Administration.

Moradabad Celebrates the National Aquatic Animal, Students Pledge to get Dolphins in Ramganga

District Administration & Forest Department of Moradabad along with WWF-India organized school activities to commemorate Dolphin Day in the city

October 5, 2013, New Delhi: The Eco Park (Deer Park) of Moradabad city saw a unique celebration of the anniversary of Government of India's declaration of the Gangetic River Dolphin as the 'National Aquatic Animal' in October 5, 2009 in form of elocution , poetry and quiz competitions on the specie. WWF-India, with the support of the District Administration & Forest Department of Moradabad, conducted film screening of WWF-India’s Dolphin documentary, along with quiz, poetry, elocution competitions. These activities were organized to generate awareness on Ramganga conservation amongst the young talent in the city and to provide a platform for engaging them in Ramganga conservation activities as part of the Wildlife Week celebrations.

Through these activities, WWF-India’s Rivers for Life programme aimed to bring attention to the importance of the presence of the National Aquatic Animal, Dolphin and ways to conserve other aquatic biodiversity present in the river. The elocution, poetry amd quiz competitions, which saw students from 6^th to 8^th grade, from over 15 schools , including Kasturba Gandhi in Moradabad sharing their views on the importance of the biodiversity for the ecological wellbeing of the river, witnessed thought provoking visions for a healthy Ramganga, including getting Dolphins to Moradabad’s Ramganga. Often known as the “Tiger of the Ganges”, the river dolphin is an indicator animal and has the same position in a river ecosystem as a tiger in a forest, its presence indicating a sign of a healthy river ecosystem.

The event which was spearheaded by Dr. Sandeep Behera, Dolphin Expert & Associate Director, River Basins & Water Policy, WWF-India,  saw a detailed presentation on the species, highlighting shrinking distribution range of these dolphins, with their population being adversely affected by various developmental activities like the construction of dams and barrages resulting in lean river flows, indiscriminate fishing, heavy siltation of rivers due to deforestation, pollution of the river and habitat destruction. “While the population of dolphin in 1982 was estimated to be between 4000-5000 in India, now it is less than 2000 with an annual mortality estimated to be at 130-160 animals. The mammal is now listed in Schedule I of the Indian Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972 and categorized as “Endangered” by the World Conservation Union (IUCN) and enjoys high levels of legal protection, nationally and internationally”, added Dr, Sandeep Behera, Associate Director, River Basins & Water Policy, WWF-India.

WWF-India adopted the Ganges river dolphin as a species of special concern and initiated a Ganges River Dolphin Conservation programme in 1997. In 2012, the organization also conducted the first ever Scientific Status Survey of the species in the country in collaboration with network partners. In the process, more than 20 rivers were surveyed, covering a distance of approximately 6000 km and several river stretches in the country were identified as ideal habitats for Ganges River Dolphin population and hence for prioritized conservation action. The three day long campaign which included surveying of over 20 rivers, concluded on October 7, 2012, found the presence of 671 dolphins in the upper Ganga system.

At WWF-India we believe that these fun activities are powerful means of engaging  young adults in tackling development challenges, and hold the potential to transform the pace and nature of development. Ramganga for Life, Life for Ramganga campaign also aims to engage with students as they are the future change makers for our society.”

The Dolphin Day celebration was part of the Wildlife Week celebrations, which concludes on October 7, 2013 in the city of Moradabad.

The winners of all the competitions conducted throughout the Wildlife Week, as a token of appreciation, will get prizes by the District Magistrate of Moradabad, Shri Sanjay Kumar ( IAS) on October 7 at Eco Park ( Deer Park). Additionally, all the participants would receive certificates from District Administration of Moradabad and WWF-India. The Wildlife Week celebrations yet again reiterate the importance of multi-stakeholders, comprising experts, technicians, senior government officials, young students and community members to come together to deliberate on strategies to protect the species.
